I had a dream last night in which books figured prominently. I have never had this happen, far as I can remember.
In this dream I was following around this flamboyant internet business guru of sorts – a cross between Meryl Streep in the Devil Wears Prada and Buddha…
A co-worker and I followed her on this winding path through offices of all sorts – and tried to keep up with her. As we passed through each office my attention was drawn to the books on the walls. These were giant books in dimension… all hardcovers. No softcovers to be found anywhere. Every one of them was of major importance – and I recognized a lot of the titles. What struck me was that when I focused on the title of one – I’d notice the books beside it were named very similarly, and yet were a variation of the main theme of the first book that caught my eye.
I remember being psyched about the books in a way that I never was before. It was like they were right there for my observation – my study, if I chose to do so. I remember thinking that these are the books that have changed the entire world.
They were all BIG BOOKS.
The Bible, The Koran, 7 Habits of Successful People, Hannibal, Awaken the Giant Within, Shakespeare’s works, The Art of War, Classic Fairy Tales, Harry Potter books, Suess!
My head was spinning at the variety of Big Books. They were all the best of the best – and yet their subjects didn’t overlap much. The dream was showing me that there are all sorts of Big Books – focusing on hundreds, thousands of topics.
So, what was the result of the dream?
I have this sense of awe about Big Books. I have this idea in mind that nothing else is worth writing. If I’m going to write – it’s going to be monumental in importance. The attempt may fail miserably, that’s not the point. The point is to write Big Books, not focus on little projects that might sell a couple books each day. I need to write Books that sell a couple thousand copies per day.
In the past I’ve focused on making “just enough”. I’ve never really focused on the Big One.
Fear of failure? Perhaps.
Probably the reason is, I’m such a realist, and I know that the probability of writing a book that sells millions of copies – is slim to squat.
Whereas writing a book that sells 5-10 copies at a time is doable, easier, and more likely.
I can come up with Big Topics for Big Books. That isn’t a big deal.
The problem is – the one problem is…
The topics I want to write about are huge – and yet, I don’t have any feel for whether or not anyone else in the world wants to read about them. I am NOT in touch with the mainstream interests.
There is one topic in particular that I get reminded of daily. It’s in my face daily. It’s something that drives me a little crazy – daily. It isn’t going away – ever. There is nothing the human race can do about the topic – at all.
Is this something people want to be reminded of? Is the hopelessness of our situation something anyone will want to pay to read about?
I don’t know about that.
I just don’t know.
So, the search for a Big Book topic, goes on…
